Emergency lights , EN 81-20

Lift standard EN 81-20 comes into force on 1 September 2017 and specifies such aspects as emergency lighting requirements. For instance, it is necessary to attain at least 5 Lux in the centre of the lift car at a height of one metre. In addition to the lift car size, a key role is also played by the installation height, the component’s angle of radiation and the supply voltage in terms of whether the emergency lighting can meet the requirements stipulated by EN 81-20. Generally speaking, brighter emergency lighting is now demanded than was previously the case. SCHAEFER has therefore enhanced the existing displays and luminous fields and developed more powerful versions (identified as ‘EL’) for use as emergency lighting in accordance with standard EN 81-20.

Seeing as the standard-compliant emergency lighting depends significantly on the actual installation situation, we have carried out extensive testing which provides us with information on the expected luminous intensity in various application scenarios. Our new online product catalogue includes a tool which, after specifying the voltage, lift car size and the installation height, lists all the emergency lighting components suitable for your project. By specifying the measured brightness, you can immediately see how large your actual buffer is to achieve the required 5 Lux.
